Archaeology Progress
For this project, I focused on archaeology and Egypt, which is something I was fascinated with as a little kid. The various subjects within the painting all relate back to these topics. I began this project by sketching my design out on the canvas. Then, I started to paint the sky since it was the furthest back portion of my painting. I chose light blue and orange because they are complimentary colors and are both naturally found in the sky and in sunsets.
Once I finished the sky, I painted the pyramids and the sand. For both, I also chose complimentary colors. The sand is beige, and the shadows are red-violet. Then, I painted the frame of the sandbox and the little girl. To avoid accidentally painting over the girl with the brown paint of the frame and to paint straight lines, I taped the edges and peeled them away once I was done.
Next, I painted the different artifacts and tools in the sand, which included a sarcophagus, a canopic jar, a cat statue, a scarab beetle, a shovel, and a bucket. I used gold paint for most of these, which was difficult because the paint I used was very opaque, so I had to do many layers and mix colors. I then painted the palm trees and grass because I felt there was too much empty space in the sand. The last thing I did was add actual sand inside the box by dumping sand onto wet acrylic.
