Art 4 Glass Painting Critique
DESCRIBE
The painting is an oil painting of glass. There are a lot of colors in the glass that help to give it depth. The glass of each piece is slightly blurred, which makes it appear more realistic. The glass is set on top of a reddish colored piece of fabric. There are many very dark shadows and brightly colored highlights on both the glass and the fabric.
ANALYZE
My piece uses a wide variety of colors to show depth and variety. The whole surface of any object--not only glass--isn’t going to be exactly the same, and I attempted to achieve this through my use of colors. As I mentioned before, the colors also helped with the value. Cool colors take the eye back whereas warm colors bring it forward, which is what I focused on in this piece.
INTERPRET
When making this painting, I didn’t have any deeper meaning in mind, but I focused on achieving realism. I mainly wanted to practice applying what I know about color and how it impacts the overall piece. Many of the colors I used and the way I did was not completely realistic to how they appear in real life, because I drew out the original colors and made them much more vibrant. In many of the darkest shadows I used a dark green since it contrasts with the bright red in the rest of the fabric.
JUDGE
I like how this piece turned out. In the beginning, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to make the glass look realistic and finish the painting by its due date, so it exceeded the expectations I had for myself. The reflections in the glass look realistic despite the vibrant colors I used that didn’t actually exist in real life. The piece is a technical piece, since I didn’t create it with a deeper meaning in mind. I solely did the painting to practice realism and colors.
