CONCENTRATION STATMENT

In my body of work, I explored the relationship between childhood interests and scientific ideas. My art seeks to discover how children have an inherent curiosity to examine the world and to tell a story through their eyes within each work. Throughout my sustained investigation, I stressed a childlike imagination towards each scientific topic by mixing reality with fantasy; many of the situations depicted do not or cannot exist in the world, but in a child’s eyes, they do. I gave the children ambiguous features to allow my audience to imagine themselves in their place, thus reliving their own childhood experiences. After beginning with two black and white pieces, I transitioned to a much more colorful palette; children are vibrant people and to depict the world through their eyes without color would not truly capture who they are. I also experimented with mixed media elements, including sand in piece 3, tissue paper in pieces 5, 7, and 8, and glow in the dark stars in piece 9 to incorporate actual pieces of my childhood. As my work progressed, I became increasingly comfortable with creating larger artworks while still retaining the same level of detail as my smaller ones.
